When
spring comes the days are long and the sun is starting to poke its face out and so
are the scourge of the cat: FLEAS !. Fleas are parasites that suck blood from pets to feed
themselves, before laying eggs that change to a larva to a pupa to an adult. These adults
jump onto your cat and start the cycle all over again. They breed rapidly in your warm
carpeted home, in fact 2 fleas can produce 2000 in as little as 3 months if not controlled
!
Fleas can produce irritation, cause allergies, transmit tapeworms and they can bite you as
well as your cat leaving itchy red bites, usually on your ankle. So to help ensure good
health for both your cats and yourself you need to control fleas all year round.
There are a number of ways of safely treating your cat for fleas. At Pet Doctors we do not
recommend the use of flea collars because the chemicals in the flea collar can burn the
skin around the cats neck. It is important to avoid any product containing
organophosphates as these products can easily cause toxicity and even death.
Unfortunately, flea powders do not work because the powder simply falls off the cats
fur soon after it is put on.
A number of products are now available that are safe and easy to apply. Most veterinary
surgeons stock these products so contact your local clinic to discuss which treatment
would be best for your cat. Dont forget that it is important to treat the fleas in
the carpet as well as the fleas on your pet so make sure you pick up a can of household
spray while you are there. The World's Worst Cat Jokes
