Despite
the image of cats being laid back and relaxed all the time, as vets we are frequently
presented with cats that are showing signs of stress. This stress may come about by having
too many cats in one household, having disruption to their house life or by having (and
this is very common) another cat breaking in through their cat flap and destroying their
feeling of security.
Cats that are stressed may become withdrawn, spending more time under the bed or behind
the sofa or they may start spraying urine or urinating in inappropriate places. Spraying
can be done by both male and female cats and can be very distressing for all concerned.
Cats spray to release pheromones that surround them with their own scents (which we cannot
smell) and this helps them feel more secure, although the anger of their keepers (not
owners of course) may not help that security. There is help at hand. We now recommend a
pheromone that mimics the cats own and, therefore, makes them feel happy and stops them
spraying. The product is simply plugged into a socket and the pheromone is released just
like an air freshener but with no smell. The great thing is that we can help cats (and
their owners!) de-stress without any tablets or medications. If you think your pussycat is
feeling a bit tense then speak to your local vet and see if they can help.
